Porsche Flachbau RS: A Factory One-Off Reimagines the 935 ‘Moby Dick’

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team transformed a 2018 911 GT2 RS into a road-legal Flachbau RS, combining 935-inspired bodywork, Manthey aerodynamics and a 31.6 kg weight reduction.

Porsche has revealed the Flachbau RS, a factory one-off created through its Sonderwunsch programme from a like-new 2018 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach Package. The owner’s brief asked for greater performance, a slantnose profile and a rear wing influenced by the 911 GT3 R rennsport. Porsche, Manthey and specialists from multiple engineering teams spent almost three years turning that request into a road-legal collector car.

The visual reference is the 935/78 endurance racer known as “Moby Dick”. Flatter front wings, a tiered LED headlight system and a U-shaped exposed-carbon graphic give the car a lower, wider face without copying the historic design literally. Grand Prix White was matched to a reference vehicle in Porsche’s own collection, while black paint and visible carbon create the contrast.

The work went well beyond body styling. Porsche removed 31.6 kilograms through changes to the cabin, audio equipment, insulation and wiring. The front splitter, underbody package, diffuser, rear-wheel aerodiscs and a new adjustable rear wing were developed with Manthey. In Porsche’s high-downforce setting, the car produces 554 kilograms of rear-axle downforce at 340 km/h.

Because it remains a registered road car, the project also required structural analysis, crash and airbag simulation, lighting validation, wind-tunnel work and physical component testing. That combination of heritage styling and contemporary homologation is what makes the Flachbau RS more significant than a conventional cosmetic conversion.

For collectors, this is a useful reminder that Porsche’s highest level of personalisation can involve deep engineering, but the result is not a new production derivative available through normal ordering. It is a single customer commission. Comparable vehicles, provenance and any potential Japan-to-overseas transaction would need individual verification.
